Conventional wisdom suggests commercial solutions have big communities and open source small ones, but it could just as easily be the reverse and depends on the specific software in question, so I'm calling this one a categorical wash.Īnyways, as my contrived example masterfully shows, open source focuses first on freedom - "nobody can take this away and you can do what you want with it" - whereas commercial software focuses first on security - "this gets the job done and you don't have to get your fingernails dirty".
